Bali Rubbish Law & Penalties

You probably can’t tell but Bali does have a strict law against pollution. It is for example not allowed to burn rubbish in Bali. The sanction if caught burning rubbish in Denpasar can be a 50 million penalty and/or a prison sentence of up to 6 months.

These are extracts from a regulation in Denpasar that were issued in 2015. You can find a link to the Indonesian version of the law at the bottom of this article.

CHAPTER IV: CLEAN ENVIRONMENT
Part One: Orderly Disposal of Garbage and Waste
Article 12 (page 9)

(1) Everyone must dispose of garbage and waste at the designated place.
(2) Everyone is prohibited from throwing and stacking garbage on roads, green lanes, city parks, rivers, channels, drainage and other places that can damage the beauty and cleanliness of the environment.
(3) Everyone is prohibited from disposing of waste on roads, green lines, city parks, rivers, channels / drainage, and other places that can cause pollution.
(4) Everyone is prohibited from burning garbage.

CHAPTER IX: SANCTIONS
Part Two: Criminal Sanctions
Article 58 (page 18)

(2) Anyone who violates the provisions in Article 12 of this Regional Regulation is threatened with a maximum imprisonment of 6 (six) months or a fine of a maximum of Rp 50,000,000 (fifty million rupiahs) and may be subject to other sanctions from statutory regulations applicable.
